The City of Helsinki sought to develop a website for participatory budgeting that would merge relevant urban data with an engaging, experiential approach. The goal was to inspire residents to explore and interact with information about their city in a way that would help them to create more informed proposal submissions and voting decisions.
To achieve this, I designed a new user interface concept centered around a map-based experience. Users could browse proposals directly on the map, while simultaneously accessing rich layers of information about different neighborhoods. These included statistical data, detailed descriptions, and insights from local residents, all presented in an intuitive and visually appealing way.
The final interface concept brought together functionality and inspiration. By combining location-based exploration with relevant urban insights, the website empowered users to engage meaningfully with the participatory budgeting process. The dynamic, map-driven design turned city data into a storytelling tool, helping residents understand their neighborhoods better and make informed decisions that align with their values and needs.
